Special Study Session On Person Centered Challenges and Progress Print
March 23-24, 2010
9am - 4pm
NOCLS
2400-46th Avenue
Vernon, BC

The focus of the event is to gather together serious minded practitioners for a rather more in-depth sharing and analysis of what has worked and what remains difficult in generating person centered options in BC. The intent would be to record what transpires and to prepare a document that captures what is learned. I (Michael J. Kendrick PhD) will act as the facilitator for the event and will likely be involved in putting together whatever document emerges. This event would look at person centered work in all domains of people's lives eg. work, home, community, personal networks, leisure etc.

The aims of this special study session, in more detail, are as follows:

  • To make available the opportunity for each participating agency to share what they have accomplished to date in an organized way. Apparently, many agencies are sometimes unaware of the detail of the work of other agencies even though they are working along similar lines.
  • To identify what has worked well and met with at least some measure of success and try to define this success as well as its limits.
  • To identify the challenges that have arisen and what has proven difficult to surpass in terms of these challenges and why this is so.
  • To generate recommendations as to how matters could be improved.
  • To identify where useful leadership is needed and the potential sources of that leadership.
  • To allow some time for socialization and continued networking.

We have on a very preliminary basis estimated that the event would cost around $180.00 per person for onsite costs at 30 people. Travel and lodging would be on top of this.

We anticipate having mostly agency people in attendance with some CLBC participation as space allows. Given the intent to keep the event small, more manageable and productive at the level of substance, we would think that no more than three people from each agency would attend.

Depending upon space available, we are quite willing to open it up to other interested agencies, particularly those that have had an extended degree of involvement with these issues. If you have suggestions feel free to let us and them know, notwithstanding the limits on size. I am also happy to talk with anyone who is interested to help them get their questions answered.
